This summer I managed to win 5 sources of scholarships to fund my research placements. The problem with these is that they are often very difficult to locate, so I thought I would create a resource with some useful links and information!
This is not a exhaustive list. If you are looking for others in slightly different fields - this is a useful (if slightly outdated) source from 2018 and many of these are still running: https://www.rsb.org.uk/get-involved/grants/undergraduate-studentships
Here are my suggestions:
The London NERC DTP Research Experience Placements
This offers to fund ~6 weeks worth of project wages and up to £500.00 research costs in London. Applications open April 2022.
Gurdon/Company of Biologists Summer Studentship
This one is for developmental biology and funs £200.00 wages a week for ~8 weeks. Deadline May 21st
Genetics Society Summer Studentships
Currently 300.00 pound per week and lab costs, BUT may change before deadline. Also a workshop in Oxford in September 2022. Need to apply with a lab group.
Plant Health Undergraduate Studentships
Not open yet of 2022,
Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour
3 application deadlines: 1st February, 1st June and 1st October.
The scholarship grant in 2022 includes £380 per week towards subsistence for the student, and additional research expenses (including equipment and consumables) and travel expenses (commuting or one-off return journeys between their home, the institute where they carry out the research, and field sites) up to a maximum total grant of £3800.
Botantical Society of Scotland
Fieldwork in Scotland- up to £500.00. Deadline is April 30th.
University of Cambridge Specific
I applied through Cambridge so this is what I have the most experience in. But it is always worth checking out what your university have on offer:
HE Durham
Small grant through Kings College (but not just for Kings Students) for projects that advance, improve or share knowledge that improves animal or human life in health or disease.
Balfour-Browne
Offers minimum wage (~£318/week) for up to 6 weeks for projects on entomology (insects).
I think you can apply if not a Cambridge student, but needs to be done in a Cambridge lab.
J. Arthur Ramsey
For this you do need to be a Cambridge student. Also offers minimum wage for up to 6 weeks.
I will update if I come across more!
